MOLESKIN FABRIC
Moleskin Fabric is a heavy fabric made from carded cotton yarn that has a dense weft-faced satin weave and is shorn to make a short, soft pile on one side. Its name originates from the soft brushed hand of this fabric, which is quite similar to mole fur. This fabric’s nap has a suede-like, less plush than velour appearance and feels more like felt or chamois.
Moleskin Fabric is well-known for its softness and durability. There are times when moleskin is densely woven to add windproof properties to the fabric. Most of these fabrics are easy to maintain with home laundry and spot cleaning. Some can be dry cleaned occasionally, so it is better to check the care label for specific cleaning instructions. This type of fabric also does not tend to wrinkle. The fabric has floats that are brushed, which gives it a suede-like surface and prevents wrinkling.
Uses of Moleskin Fabric
Moleskin Fabric is commonly used for making trousers due to its similarity to jeans in terms of construction and cut. Before, it was used as men’s workwear and is popular among British workers during the end of the nineteenth century, because of its windproof and insulating properties.
However, but in 1990’2, the German military has used this fabric to create uniforms. While it was not shorn and had a flat, smooth outer side, the fabric is tough, and has strong resistance to wind and abrasion.
Moleskin Fabric is also being used in the medical industry. It’s fitted with adhesive backing to treat or prevent blisters. It also has holes in the center to provide relief to the affected skin. Its thickness also helps protect the blister from additional friction. In addition, this fabric is also used in audiovisual productions. When using a lavalier microphone, this type of fabric is used for concealment, allowing the phone to be worn underneath layer or layers of the singer’s clothing.
